Have you ever felt discouraged at your lack of skill with a new... skill? Maybe you're interested in playing an instrument or learning a new language, but you feel like it's too daunting a task because you'd be starting from scratch. We all know intellectually that it's okay to be bad at something when we start. Taking it a step further, if it's just a hobby, you don't need to be good at it. It should just be fun. But say you're interested in building a skill, but you feel bad that your skill isn't very good. Take my progress in art as an encouragement. This is Diego, a character from one of my series. This was also one of my first digital drawings. At the time, I was okay with how Diego looked. I knew it wasn't at all like my mental image, but I also didn't have a clue how to improve. But take a look at this redraw just over a year later. All that to say, don't be afraid to do something badly. You'll never do it better if you don't go through the awkward, eyes-staring-through-your-very-soul phase.
Go out there. Be bold. Make messes. Have fun!
