One time, a friend was talking to me about fitness. I was trying to explain to her a way to build more upper-body strength. I explained to her that the way I built upper-body strength was through my favorite push-ups: five seconds, constant motion, no breaks, done consistently – sometimes multiple days a week. Her response? “Oh, I wouldn’t have the motivation to do that.” I’m a terribly reserved person, so I didn’t say the words that came to mind. But, if I did, here’s what I would have said. “Motivation? Do you think I magically have the motivation? I don’t. I just do it anyway. There are days when I felt like stopping, like taking a break, or even like giving it all up. There were times that the thought of continuing was almost unbearable and I was more discouraged than you can imagine. I don’t feel motivated. I just do it because I have a goal that won’t reach itself.”
See, that’s the secret. If you aren’t feeling motivated… That’s okay. Just do it anyway. Motivation isn’t an emotion. It’s not something you always feel. It’s a desire, an end goal. This doesn’t just apply to fitness. It applies to to everything you do. Work, school, writing, art, hobbies, sports, new skills, everything. Keep doing it, even when you don’t feel like it. Action point: If you feel a “lack of motivation” to finish a project… do it anyway. Purpose: Sticking to important projects and tasks, even when you don’t feel an emotional connection to them.
